Mini GREEK WEEK:
A Three Day Odyssey

The Glory That Was Greece...oh those were the days! Gods ruled from mountaintops and superhuman heros fought mythic monsters.
We’ll fly like Pegasus through the glorious history - from the Minoans and their pottery to the great warriors and their hoplite shields. Sculptures, iconic painting...we’ll tear through the traditions, art, and mythology of Greece and its vast empire.

We'll discover remarkable civilizations that have come and gone and yet still have an impact on our everyday lives. Democracy...art...the Olympic Games!!!

OH MY STARS!
A Vincent van Gogh Intensive

It was so popular last year we just HAD to kick off summer in the studio with our favorite carrot-top artist.
Yes, we’ll have an entire week to bask in the south of France sun with Vincent and learn the abc’s to the xyz’s of one of the world’s most remarkable painters. His early years, relationships with Theo and Gauguin, his love of Japanese art, The Yellow House, and of course, his techniques. We’ll read books, listen to music, paint in the park, paint in the studio, and see lots of inspirational slide shows in Masterpiece Loft. This is the class for those pint-sized self-proclaimed ‘experts’ and newcomers alike. Think your child likes Vincent now? Just wait till June 28th.

THE IMPRESSIONISTS ARE COMING!

You may know the names...., Degas, Renoir, Morisot, Sisley...but by the end of the week, your child will be able to pick out a Monet from a Manet...oooh, mais oui! It’s a dreamy summer week filled with lilies, haystacks, and ballerinas. We’ll dabble in cadmium yellow and cerulean blue and swish around in ultramarine and emerald green. We’ll learn the lives of the great Impressionists and the unique styles that inspired them to chase and capture that fleeting moment of the present. There wasn’t a shadow without color and the deepest shadows were tinged with green and purple. We will head down to Maple Leaf park on some days AND as a special treat, we will meet one morning by the lilly pond at the Arboretum where we’ll pull out our easels, and paint the profusion of weeping willows and water lilies. (that was a HUGE hit last year!)

UNDERSTANDING FRIDA

It’s been 56 years since she died, but Frida Kahlo’s work has inspired millions and reproductions of her work can be found over everything from mouse pads to lunch boxes. And to think she was all but ignored as a serious artist during her lifetime!

Kids love her flamboyant style but Frida was more than colorful clothes and exotic pets. We’ll channel this incredible artist by making wonderful artwork in the spirit of “Fridamania” all the while studying her Mexican heritage, home, and culture, and see how these factors figured prominently in her artwork and identity. We’ll explore how artists in general are inspired by the world around them and some ways that Frida in particular used her art to express not only her emotions, but her physical being as well.
Frida has always been SUPER popular at the studio and we have some new and super exciting projects planned.

AMERICAN IDOLS!
AMERICAN ARTISTS AND THEIR GREATEST HITS.

They rocked the art world and left a string of greatest hits that we will enjoy for years to come. Whistler, Edward Hopper, Romare Bearden, Jackson Pollock, and Georgia O’Keeffe (to name but a few).
The United States has been a non-stop hit factory for a long time. Interesting lives, yup! Interesting art? Definitely.
And how will we celebrate our greatest? We’ll paint cities and flowers like Georgia, flags like Jasper Johns, paint our own American slice of life like Mr. Hopper, and listen to jazz while creating Pollock-style masterpieces. (and that’s just getting started).
Move over Simon. When it comes to American art ...YOU’LL be the judge.

PICASSO BLOCKBUSTER

Whether your child knows a little or a lot about Picasso (or wouldn’t know him from his Great Uncle Ernie), this is the perfect chance to get them ready for The Seattle Art Museum’s big Picasso show scheduled this coming fall!
The exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Musée National Picasso in Paris, will feature some 150 works of art from various points in his career.
That means we have a whole week to learn about his paintings, sculptures, and drawings and create art as furiously as the master himself.
And just think, once your child takes this week-long intensive, you’ll have your own personal tour guide when you go to SAM this October.

Summertime Fun At Early Masters:

Explore the exciting world of art in the sunny studios at Early Masters.
Children begin their days in “Masterpiece Loft” with early morning ‘round table’ discussions and slide presentations. It is here the stage is set for the theme of the day. Famous art works, art vocabulary, and history of the period are all presented to the child in a fun and engaging manner.

After morning discussion, they head downstairs to the fun, messy, practical part of the program where they create their own masterpieces in many different mediums. Children are always inspired by the often eclectic music choices chosen precisely for the period studied. All artwork is created with very high quality materials such as artist canvas and acrylic paints.

Everyday, children go home with a “What We Learned Today” handout that encourages interesting family discussions around the dinner table. The last day is an exciting one of course--Gallery Day! Parents come in and much ooooohhhing and aaaahhhhhing will commence when the artwork is revealed. Children take great pride in sharing their new love (and hopefully lifelong appreciation) of art history with their families.
